At Junto, we believe there are three types of empathy: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate.<\/p>\n

Cognitive empathy is when we\u00a0understand<\/em>\u00a0others and their experience. Emotional empathy is when we\u00a0feel<\/em>\u00a0what others do. Compassionate empathy is when we\u00a0act<\/em>\u00a0on either the cognitive or emotional (in other words, compassion requires one of the other two).<\/p>\n

Today, like many people, I\u2019m struggling with how to be compassionate for Black people.<\/p>\n

As a second-generation Indian-American, even though I\u2019ve experienced racism and discrimination, I will never\u00a0feel<\/em>\u00a0what Black people have accumulated over fourteen generations. And so the only option I have to be more compassionate is to better\u00a0understand<\/em>\u00a0their experience.<\/p>\n

The more books I read, documentaries I watch, museums I visit, conversations I have, and stories I hear\u2026the more I can deepen that understanding and, hopefully, the more empathetic I can become.<\/p>\n

This is why, in my opinion, it does little good to publish comments that we \u201cstand with\u201d Black people, promote our diversity and inclusion efforts, or say that we\u2019re not racist. First, those statements aren\u2019t about them, they\u2019re about us. And second, none of them is rooted in understanding or mutual feeling.<\/p>\n

Many Black activists and thoughtful citizens are telling the rest of us to \u201clisten, learn, and act.\u201d Notice the eerie coincidence?
