Sometimes it’s my own and sometimes it’s others’. But in all cases, they’re delightful learning moments that are important to share with others.

Last week, I overheard someone I don’t know tell a team member, “I need you to get that report draft…” It occurred to me that there was a time I used that phrase quite often. And it’s a classic example of emotionally unintelligent leadership.

Using our building blocks framework, “I need you to…” is a statement that lacks the use of social awareness and relationship management skills. It’s command-like, showing virtually no interest in the other person and demonstrating a lack of empathy. In addition, it’s not an effective way to inspire and influence someone. “I need you to…” comes across as being self-centered, making it all about the person saying it.

So the next time we find ourselves about to utter those words, let’s try engaging our self-awareness skills (knowing the impact we have on others). Instead, let’s use a polite request to ask the same thing we’re trying to communicate. It’s more likely to demonstrate effective leadership: moving the other person in the direction we’re going. And it’s more emotionally intelligent.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default”…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

58

0":"post-420","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-emotionalintelligence
["GET
